ABOUT THE ARTIST

ABOUT THE ARTIST

“Inspired by my Ijaw and Itsekiri heritage, my illustrations and mixed media paintings celebrate the sacred essence of my indigenous African womanhood through a vibrant, yet fluid, abstract lens. In my storytelling, I explore spiritual themes of divine feminine power, sovereignty, and decolonization of mind, body, and spirit through a modern, yet ancestrally rooted, lens. My creative work explores the postcolonial society’s relationship to nature, and how our cultural creations can honor our soul’s connection to Mother Earth and all that is. Furthermore, I engage with the energy of love as a transformative force in all my art– love to myself, love to my creator, and love to humanity. Ultimately, I am infusing my unique life experience and ongoing odyssey of self-discovery into an art career that inspires the spiritual, emotional, and intellectual expansion of young African women leaders across the globe.”

our founder

Alaere Lifestyle LLC is owned and operated by Odemi Pessu, multidisciplinary artist and author of Force of Nature. Alaere translates to “queen or woman of substance” from Ijaw, her mother’s maiden tongue. Raised by two Nigerian immigrants and entrepreneurs in Atlanta, Odemi Pessu grew up with aspirations of one day changing the world through art, business, and political activism. After amassing nine years of experience in corporate America, she knew it was time to start something new. Seeing a need for positive media that reinforces the spiritual and cultural significance of African and indigenous women globally, Odemi Pessu founded Alaere Lifestyle.

Her mission is to holistically embolden modern Afro-indigenous women globally to live and love as a physical embodiment of divine flow and consciousness. Through harnessing the power of art, literature, and educational media, Alaere Lifestyle is inspiring the next generation of beautifully sovereign women artists, lovers, and leaders.

A direct descendant of noteworthy chiefs from the Warri kingdom, and bearing two advanced degrees, a B.A. in International Political Economy and Master of Public Affairs, from Brown University, Odemi Pessu channels her desire to change the world into Alaere Lifestyle’s art, literature, and fruitful business partnerships. Her first book, Force of Nature, is internationally distributed in bookstores across the United States, Europe, and Oceania.

In 2014, the Georgia House of Representatives lauded her “selfless dedication, mental agility, verbal adroitness, and personal maturity” with a house resolution in her honor. Through Alaere Lifestyle’s multi-faceted mission, Odemi Pessu is cultivating the intellectual and spiritual expansion of young African women leaders globally.
