Shakti: Abstract Expressionism Meets Sovereign Feminine Creation
A Celebration of Divine Feminine Power, Sovereignty & Sacred Creation
There are moments when a painting becomes more than an image. Somewhere in between fevered brush strokes and instrumental pauses, it becomes an archive of healing memory, and ancestral release. As an artist, I call this alchemy.
Shakti is an abstract expressionist painting exploring the power of sovereign feminine energy, sensuality, and the sacred act of creation. The word Shakti originates from ancient Indian spiritual traditions, particularly Hindu philosophy, where it represents the divine feminine force—the primordial energy associated with creation, transformation, and the dynamic power of the universe.
Inspired by my journey as an American woman with Itsekiri and Ijaw roots, this piece reflects a deeper exploration of what it means to reclaim the body, identity, and creative expression beyond the limitations imposed by colonial narratives. I also challenge the notion of the female body as abject to respectable society. In this vein, I subtly ask viewers of their art to engage in some self reflection.
I want viewers to sincerely ponder whether they find themselves feeling fear, attraction, or confusion when greeted with an unrestrained depiction of feminine passion and sensuality. Through this work, I consider the connections between different ancestral understandings of divine feminine power, spirituality, and the sacred nature of creation.
In Shakti, I connect this divine creative force to the sacral chakra and the womb space: the nucleus of divine intuition, imagination, and sovereign creation.
Unlike my earlier figurative works, Shakti marked a pivotal evolution in my artistic practice. Rather than beginning with a carefully mapped composition, I allowed intuition, emotion, and movement to guide the process. Each layer intensified my inner discourse a between surrender and control. What ensued? A visual expression of freedom.
For me, art transcends commercial aesthetics. It is a vehicle of cultural production, commentary, and rebellion.
Through Shakti, I hope to expand the presence of Afro-indigenous perspectives within the world of abstract art. I am celebrating the sensual, powerful, and transformative energy that has shaped societies, crumbled empires, launched ships, and cultivated life since humanity's inception.
